'cos I can't google this...

the f8-f10 keys on my macbook pro, so far as I can tell, should be contrast control. However, when I click them, the contrast greybox pops up with the scale empty and a "no access" sign underneath.

Anyone know why this is? Makes calibrating the bloody thing kinda tricky.

Oh, *that* explains the weird-arse symbol.

What he said, but if you really want to set/test it, put your hands over both speaker grilles at once (this may leave you with insufficient hands to press the F-keys).

That being the case, the feat should probably not be attempted until another hand or two have been obtained, preferably with the person from whom they've been borrowed still attached, since in addition to the hands you'll also need someone to operate them.

As related question, anybody know how to make them function as actual function on a semi-permanent basis (like a function-lock?) It's always mildly annoying when I attempt to use them as game controls and wind up muting my sound.

I think the approved solution is to buy an external keyboard :/
