| Book 39: The Maze Runner by James Dashner | Nov. 15th, 2009 12:08 am | |
|---|---|---|
|
Here is book thirty-nine from my Book List 2009. The link leads to a more detailed review in my journal. 39. Title: The Maze Runner Author: James Dashner Pages: 374 Thoughts: Link Review in five words or less: Intriguing puzzle; engrossing, fast-paced. Personal Rating: «««« out of five. The only thing Thomas can remember when he exits the lift is his name. He steps into a community filled with boys who have all been in his situation. One new boy arrives every month, and it has been that way for two years. The boys adhere to a strict schedule, so no one really has the time to tell Thomas much of anything at first. He must struggle to acclimatize himself and figure out what's going on from observation. The boys live in a giant maze filled with traps and vicious creatures. They have been trying to solve the mystery of the maze for two years to find a way out. It is the responsibility of the Runners in the group to go out into the Maze and map out their assigned quadrants. It's a quite challenge because the walls of the Maze move regularly. Thomas immediately wants to join the Runners because it feels familiar to him—he just can't figure out why. Then a mysterious girl shows up in the lift and things change rapidly and become more dire. They must work quickly to find a way out. They must work together to survive. This was extremely fast-paced and I enjoyed it a lot. With each new chapter, the mystery of the Maze continued to grow, and it was interesting trying to figure out why the boys were there in the first place. My theories didn't match up with the end result, but I was completely satisfied with how it ended. The only thing I didn't really like was the girl. Her attitude was irritating and she seemed completely out of place in the story. The book ended with a rather fascinating cliffhanger, and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel. Highly recommended. | ||

A list, in no particular order:
Oh the movie? Oh it was fine actually, the world blowing up with great special effects, and a minimal of that silly character development stuff (actually it did have some pretty good characters in it) made it a fun ride. The rest of the experience however, aims to make me want to justify a big screen TV and blue-ray plwyer so I don't have to deal with the other humans in the movie theaters as much. | ||

| #95: "Get Positively Beautiful" by Carmindy | Nov. 14th, 2009 10:42 pm | |
|---|---|---|
|
This is absolutely NOT the sort of book I would ever buy or pick up on my own as 1) I use a bare minimum of make-up 2) I find cosmetics rather intimidating, and I'm self-conscious about shopping for them. However, I won this in a gift pack earlier this year, and after a few days of feeling like I look bleh, I figured it was as good a time as any to read it. Actually, I was pretty impressed with the book. It lives up to the title, emphasizing that THINKING positively will reflect in a person's face and empower them more than make-up alone ever could. True, that. Carmindy (who does make-up on the show What Not to Wear) also emphasizes focusing on good facial features rather than covering up the bad. The book has chapters on each part of the face - lips, eyes, skin, cheeks - and shows techniques on how to handle different shapes/textures/colors. I especially liked the examples of how to apply eye shadow for different shapes and times of day; it makes me feel like actually trying out eyeshadow for the first time in, oh, three years. There's a chapter on tools, explaining different sorts of little brushes and thingamajigs. The back of the book shows real women of all ages and ethnicities and how they look before and after. Carmindy is very good at her job. That said, sometimes the positive-emphasis was a bit overdone. Almost ever paragraph had sentences like: Fabulous! Gorgeous! The book also isn't bound for friendly use in a bathroom. It's hardcover and oversized like a coffee table book. Pages don't stay open on their own. As far as functionality, it would have been more prudent to make it glossy and spiral-bound. Those are the only gripes, though. It's a nice book for gals like me who might want to dress up every now and then, but don't exactly know how. I actually went out and bought a lip liner and pencil eye liner today. Whoa. | ||

What a fun gig. Great vibe, crowd singing along, really fine energy and all the rest made for a swell evening at Brixton Academy. Pity was that Patrick had 2 tickets going a-begging, so two of you could probably have seen the band for free or for the price of a pint. There were more people trying to sell tickets to unsympatheic touts than I've seen since the 7/7/2005 rescheduled REM gig. You don't expect touts to offer £5 or under for a sold out show. Confused as to how this happened; maybe too many 30-somethings grabbed multiple tickets assuming their mates would be up for the gig. We were offered tickets for £2 in the Beehive, which wasn't what we wanted when Patrick had 2 spares in his pocket. Pity I had to feel pretty shite the whole way thru the gig. It took the edge off the gig, but it was still a very cool evening. Sheriff Fatman was totally awesome, as was the band's banter (yeah this is the last final gig) and the full schoolboy choir. Too sickly to head down to Minories - I was psyched up for the bus ride to Camden & Elixer, but Tower Bridge is a bit far when I'm feeling like cack. Hope you had a great birthady night Missy K8 :o) Roll on Monday afternoon at UCH, and some answers from the quacks. | ||

| Netbeans PHP CodeSniffer Plugin: Now with Options Dialog | Nov. 14th, 2009 09:56 pm | |
|---|---|---|
|
Just two days before the International PHP Conference 09 will start I got an email from alexandrehaguiar that he forked my Netbeans PHP CodeSniffer plugin and added the long awaited Options screen. This is just awesome! This way I don't have to ask the Netbeans guys at IPC all the questions about how to implement it. I merged the changes back into my branch and released a new version which also fixed another small bug. For me it works with both Netbeans 6.7.1 and 6.8 Beta. I want to thank alexandre very much for this awesome contribution. What you can do now is chose the Coding Standard you want to use in an Options Dialog under the "Miscallenous" button. You can choose from a list of pre-defined standards, or even enter your own if you use one. Additionally you can disable that warning are shown, so that with any given coding standard you only see the errors. You can download the new version from the Github Project Downloads page. | ||

93. The Alchemist's Daughter- Katharine McMahon, 311 pages, 3/5 Historical romance about a sheltered country girl who finds herself introduced to the darker side of London society. I didn't really enjoy the story and I found the ending very unsatisfying. 94. Will- Christopher Rush, 496 pages, 4/5 William Shakespeare reminisces on his life from his deathbed as he drafts his will. This book was certainly colourful: sex, death and bodily functions on practically every page and lots of swearing. It quotes a lot of his plays too so if you're a fan it might be worth a read. 95. An Officer's Manual of the Western Front 1914-1918, 158 pages. This densely packed little book contained reprints of some of the pamphlets available to British officers during WW1. Interesting information on trench design amongst others. 96. Vainglory- Ronald Fairbank, 200 pages, 1.5/5 Bits of this were amusing but for the most part I had no idea what was going on. Characters continually interrupted and talked over each other and in one chapter there was almost two pages of dialogue before the speakers were named. Far too confusing for me! | Fall cleanup at the Brooklyn Quaker Cemetery | Nov. 14th, 2009 05:30 pm | |
|---|---|---|
![]() I spent a couple of hours today in the lovely Quaker Cemetery in the middle of Prospect Park, helping rake leaves and fix the gravestones. Lots of kids from the Brooklyn Friends School were there, which was really sweet. What kid doesn't like jumping onto a pile of fall leaves? ![]() It was a drizzly, chilly day. But that didn't deter the 20 or so adults and kids who came to do some Fall cleaning of the plots and land around the graves. I was late so only got about an hour of work in, which was kind of disappointing. Still it was great meeting other local Quakers and families of children in our school. The cemetery sextant (caretaker) Bob gave us a detailed tour of the graves and local flora, including the largest black oak in Long Island and a giant tulip tree. What I didn't know was that most of the graves include full coffins of the deceased, rather than just the cremated remains. I had thought cremation has always been the preferred Quaker method of burial. But apparently that is a more modern practice. More Quaker cemetery pics here. | ||

OK, so, after asking about pans to cook up Finlayfood in, I thought "come on, get over yourself, the pressure cooker has had meat cooked in it before" (it used to belong to my parents). So I defrosted the bones[0], gave one raw to Fin, and chucked the rest in the pan to stew for 3 hrs. Turns out that whilst I can handle Finlay tackling a nice raw bone whilst lying on the (linoleum, washable) floor next to me, I cannot really handle 3 HOURS of SMELLY HORRIBLE bones stewing on the stove. Ew ew ew ew. I am starting to feel a little unwell. Plus then you have to dispose of them (hopefully in Marna's bokashi compost) whereas if you just give him them raw, then he disposes of them in his stomach. WHICH IS MUCH TIDIER, being as how it is *inside* of Finlay & thus pleasingly invisible. (It was a smallish bone this time, but still. Crunch crunch crunch industriously for half an hr, then CRUNCH CRUNCH and a funny gulping sound, and no more bone. I was kind of impressed.) So. This time, I have a big pan of rice, lentils, carrot, & marrow (well, we weren't going to eat the damn marrow) in bone stock. Next time, he can have the bones neat, and the rice & lentils will be veggie. ew ew ew ew ew. there are still bones in the sink, cooling off. EW. When accompanying two young lasses to what by appearances may be their (and your) first 90s reunion tour gig, and returning from the bar between songs each bearing a drink in each hand, and finding yourself somewhere to stand in a surprisingly clear space in the middle and about twelve feet back from the front railing, it behoves you to check to see whether the afore-mentioned mostly empty space is also occupied by a couple of burly crop-headed and tattooed gentlemen, wearing old tour t-shirts, who appear to be catching their breath. If you fail to carry out this, very simple, check, do not be surprised if, about halfway through the first verse of the next song, you and your companions end up wearing your drinks. [sigh] No points for observation and anticipation for that lad. At an earlier point another member of the pit had told me "No bowling!" after I'd launched one of the above-mentioned fellows across the circle. [grin] Right, it's past time to get my arse out of the door and up to Brixton ... | ||
