We lost a fine, strong leader in Kennedy today; his parting email to the party reflected the dignity, political drive and consideration that he continues to stand for. I am disappointed that he had to go like this and feel that it reflects badly on many of his colleagues, and will consider my vote in the upcoming leadership election (that being my understanding of the Lib Dem's internal system) as probably the most important yet cast; one that will help determine whether our democracy becomes a truly multi-party system or reverts to its previous tennis-match status. But for now, Charles, thank you for your remarkable and ongoing contribution to both party and country. (PS: and particular thanks for Not Being George Galloway)

Almost voting day, and somewhat unusually I'm rather wishing we a little longer ahead of us - the tories are imploding messily, putting the lie to Labour's desperate and pathetic claims that voting Lib-Dem would let in the Tories. As Charles Kennedy said last night, "If the Lib Dems had held power for four years with a three-figure majority [...], and that was the best reason I could come out with, wouldn't you feel rather disappointed?". Given another week we could really push the point home - and we're at the point where a few more percent in the polls could mean a *lot* more seats. ( The rally last night... )

This campaign is not in response to a particular threat, unless you count the threat from the Liberal Democrats. And yes, it's pretty damn obvious why they *really* want that site taken down.
| The joys of transferable voting | May. 28th, 2004 10:45 am | |

With a whole two weeks to go, Ken has finally let us see one aspect of his "policy". Hope we didn't rush him too much. Unfortunately for him, I still distinctly prefer Simon's policies in this area. And thanks to the transferable voting scheme I can vote for him without the worry that I'm "wasting" a vote that might stop that Tory nutter getting in - I can still cast my second choice on the populist ticket and give it to Ken. However I'm loath to even give Ken that much credit for the effort he's put into declaring his policies. Two weeks to go and he's finally made one aspect available online, which copies the Lib Dem line in most areas and loses the plot in others. Perhaps he feels that we should let his past speak for him (and admittedly he's done some good) - but that past was acheived as an Independent, and Ken's now sold himself back into the Labour fold. We can either believe that he'll be independent anyway, and try to carry on those past policies in conflict with his national party, or that he'll just take the Nu Labour line that's cheerfully fucking over the rest of the country. Fortunately there's the option of Simon Hughes. While his website photo may be prone to scaring small children, his policies - all consistent with, and supported by, national and federal Lib Dem policies - seem to me to have the edge on what Ken's so far admitted to, and also have the additional benefit of being published! Download the "London United" document for full details for the various representative levels - the federal policy of tackling all matters at the appropriate degree of locality means that the party does have a genuinely integrated strategy, which should help avoid the constant battling between levels that's still too often seen. At the bottom line I'm more interested in seeing people vote than telling them who to vote for, however (assuming it's not one of the various faces of the Lunatic Right). So read the policies as you find them, and make your own minds up, but FFS let's not give anything away to the BNP-alikes.

So, Ken finally produces a "policy" handout. 8 sides of gloss, compared to 24 sides of actual content from the LDs, and not a single policy he hasn't copied off of them (and even then there's no detail). Yes, sincere flattery and all that, but he's not going to be able to borrow Simon's homework if he gets elected. Nice to see he's paying attention though, however desperate he is to deny the obvious threat he feels from the LDs. Oh, and still not a single policy on Ken's site. I'm willing to hear him out, but first he's got to actually say something.

Just received Simon's Manifesto this morning - generally good stuff, but a couple of odd points - and a few more that have bugged me about previous materials: Simon appears to be promising lower taxes. Are we *sure* he's a LibDem? He also wants to cut back congestion charging hours and give five free entries to all - what the hell is the point of that? (Conversely, his arguments against extending the zone, while not present in the manifesto, do seem to make sense). My impression of the Congestion Charge zone was that it had just been too sucessful for its own good in reducing traffic, hence less cash than expected for other transport. Both Ken and Simon are supporting the LCN, considered by most cycling campaigners to be a sub-standard mess, and promising later tube running at the end of the week (wonder who thought that one up first?) Unfortunately I don't know anything else that Ken is promising, as his website promises that his policies are "coming soon". Simon's site, on the other hand, contains plenty of info, including a downloadable copy of the manifesto (the Lib Dem MEP manifesto is also available on their site). Ken is frequently slammed as "Blair's Mayor" on the principle that he "went crawling back to Labour". I was more under the impression that it was the other way around. Additionally he's accused of spending a fortune on "spin". However it's unclear whether this means he's actually informing the public, or just practicing self-aggrandizment. All things considered I'm now more inclined to vote for Simon, as Ken can't be bothered to tell us what we're voting for. This may yet change. You may notice that I've not considered Norris. I can't see why anyone with a clue would. It's also worth noting that Ken's the only possible Labour candidate I *could* vote for.
