Can't even find the anger to comment.

An interesting comparison Aug. 13th, 2006 10:52 pm
Margaret Beckett and the rest of the UK NeoCons claim that terrorists have absolutely no interest in British foreign policy.

Yet the Washington contingent seem to think that these same terrorists are gleefully examining the minutiae of US domestic politics.

Slight slip in the unified message there, I think?

Tony Blair has this morning called on the Muslim community to help root out extremism in its midst.

But his comments to MPs that home-grown terrorism is based on "a completely false sense of grievance against the West" could put a further strain on relations between community leaders and the government.

There's something wrong with the world today... Jun. 25th, 2006 04:37 pm
really colossally, terrifyingly and absurdly wrong. A thought that struck me with discomforting force as we stood in the heart of London, in front of the embassy of the nation that considers itself (and used to be widely considered) the world's guardian of liberty, and protested against their use of secret, extra-judicial kidnap, torture and indefinite internment without trial (and therefore, it seems, evidence), and our government's direct complicity therein. Against their insane, tabloid-driven attacks on human rights and the judiciary. Against the quasi-aryan vilification of refugees and asylum seekers. All in front of armed members of our own police force, patrolling behind the barricades.

What the hell century is this? How in the name of anything that might be considered sane or sacred have we got back to a situation where this is happening, where such protest has any ground to occur?

I feel a strange combination of anger, regret and confusion. I've no idea if my presence did any good, or who recorded my face there. Realising as I gave them paper airplanes that the kids there had had their father stolen by the CIA. This should be too incredible for fiction, but this is today's Britain.

Afterwards I got the chance to speak very briefly to Baroness Ludford, who had spoken boldly there, but now seemed almost exhausted by her work.

Update: Oh gods, look who hasn't had his face in the paper recently enough :/

How does one actually locate a copy of the Lib Dems constitution? The preamble's all well and good but I'd quite like to see the rest of it.

âœWhat is unbelievably depressing about the governmentâ™s response,â he said, âœis that they see, in the evidence about greenhouse gases, not an opportunity to promote environmental concern but a chance to make the case for nuclear power. ... Having made a big issue of the greenhouse effect, it became clear that energy efficiency was the best way to deal with it, but ⦠the governmentâ™s position has been characterised by a malign reluctance to have anything to do with the notion of energy conservation.â

The European Commission this week appeared to take a step back from its earlier position on the patentability of software, stating that computer programs are not patentable, and that patents on them may be struck down by the courts.

So if I tell an Evening Standard journo to fuck off, do I get a month off too?

In the context of the tape and transcript, Ken was quite obviously just pissed off by the ES's harrassment at the event he'd just attended, and formed a valid, if insensitive, criticism of one more xenphobic newspaper.

Transcript: http://media.guardian.co.uk/presspublishing/story/0,,1409314,00.html (login req'd, bugmenot available)

Ken's comment was by no means racist; you can probably find worse in any issue of the ES; it's just unfortunate that he couldn't admit that, however true the comment was, it was a bad choice of words in that situation.
