One of the reasons why George Bush has refused to restrain Israel's treatment of the Palestinians is that his political allies in the Christian Coalition believe that the Rapture - the first stage of the Apocalypse - cannot begin until the Jews have taken posession of the lands decreed by the Bible to be theirs, after which they will be converted to Christianity. By supporting Israel against Palestine, they believe they are hastening the Apocalypse, and hence their own exaltation.
