One of the reasons why George Bush has refused to restrain Israel's treatment of the Palestinians is that his political allies in the Christian Coalition believe that the Rapture - the first stage of the Apocalypse - cannot begin until the Jews have taken posession of the lands decreed by the Bible to be theirs, after which they will be converted to Christianity.
