What The Hell Made You Think That Would Work Anyway?

The Duck Race was a farce of truly British proportions; I've not the strength to give you the full de tails of de ducks, but suffice to say it was, in the words of the announcer, "A bit of a disaster". And that was the bit I missed.

No attempt was made to place the duck-containing booms (having 20000 rubber ducks escaping into the wild Not Being An Option) before the tide turned at 1:30; probably logical, but some previous testing would not have gone amiss. They layed the booms. They tangled and sunk. They disentangled them, relayed them, and they sunk again. One floated away down the river. They unrolled a new one, layed that, and it burned down, fell over and sank into the swamp Thames. They layed a shorter course; it sank. During all of this, they said "it'll be 10-15 minutes" every 10-15 minutes for 1.5 hours. Then they said "We'll do it at Four". So we buggered off for tea, moderately sure it'd now never happen. While were away, it happened; 20000 ducks slid out of a skip (taking, I'm told, 5-10 minutes to achieve this step) and immediately escaped the booms; they're probably somewhere around the Wetlands Centre by now.

Somehow they managed to call some winners; I suspect they just made the numbers up.

I managed not to see, or take a picture of, a single rubber duck. However I did get a bunch of pictures of people which are here.

And yet, I rather enjoyed it all ;)

Gaming and comics Jan. 14th, 2006 09:48 pm
Couple of comics really spoke to me today:
http://www.ozyandmillie.net/2006/om20060113.html
http://www.comics.com/comics/pearls/archive/pearls-20060114.html

Played three games today; Hive, which is quick, strategic and interesting, Byzantium, which is slow, confusing and, well, byzatine (but might be worth a clearer read of the rules) and Ave Caesar, which is always a great laugh.

Was woken at 5 this morning by a fox barking outside the front of the house - gods but that's an unpleasant noise. Especially at 5am.

[info]bmovie last night was pleasant, although I didn't stay that late - good to catch up with a lot of people although the venue's still a dive. ('cos this is so classy...)

Distinctly tired, but a brief update: BMovie was cool - seems that I know really rather a lot of the regs there now, which is good. Ended up getting the (2 hour-ish) nightbus route home (bloody busy, then when I get to Baker's Arms 4 38's pass in convoy!) and then up again (hence the start of this paragraph) for Second Saturday (about 9 there today - feel free to wave) where I had some good games of Coloretto, Gloom and Puerto Rico (tied for 1st).

Do I get the feeling more people would turn up there if it wasn't after BMovie?

Found that I play all of these games far too rarely and therefore takes me a while to get back into them each time - I need to play far more.

As for Dr Who (as I arrived home at 1903) - WTF? "Is that a laser pistol in your pocket or... Oh, wait..."

Oh...

(PS: What's the verdict on the new icon? ;)

Games, en bref Feb. 27th, 2005 10:33 am
Pretty good day, really :) I think we satisfactorily proved that the carrying capacity of our lounge is 10, those 10 being (gratuitous roll-call):
[info]aegidian, [info]asrana, [info]conflux, [info]cookwitch, [info]d_floorlandmine, [info]itsjustaname, [info]silenttex, [info]thekumquat, [info]wechsler, [info]valkyriekaren

Games were: Settlers (x2), Scrabble, Unexploded Cow, My Dwarves Fly, and Gloom. "War and Sheep" caused much comment but it's only a 2PG and didn't get used.

Contributions from Peter Sellers (never ask Karen about her David Niven anecdotes) and Versuvio Pizza rounded off a really fine afternoon / evening.

Bit zoned out now so I'm not really catching the frequent hilarity and lunacy of last night (who "warned" [info]itsjustaname about me anyway?), but I think it's going to have to be done again.

Argh, my brain has exploded! Sep. 14th, 2004 11:17 pm
LJ tells me I have something like 100 people on my friends list. After a recent trim, 90% of these are people with whom I have some sort of real-world interaction. On an intellectual level, this tells me that I have quite a lot of friends.

Tonight, about half of them (including all my partners) were in the same room, together with a smaller (it seemed) number of people that I don't know. The were also a small number of people who I'd met at bicon and would have liked to chat to.

I was (rarely for me) actually talking to people almost solidly for well over 4 hours. And I still didn't get time to talk to everyone I wanted to. Tonight was quite an overwhelming experience (albeit in a very good way) as people I know from disparate social groups all turned up at once (it also points out that a hell of a lot of my friends are queer).

Gods, life's going to be interesting. Especially with the amount of trouble I think I arranged...

I'm not even going to try and list who was there; however if you were, please comment so I can try and figure just how many people I was talking to.

Hardly surprising that I couldn't recall who I was in the end.

Out of interest (RPGs) Jul. 16th, 2004 12:56 pm
1) Do you play RPGs ?
2) Which ones?
3) Do you GM?

(brought on by reading ShadowRun "novels". Z-grade brain-candy, gotta love it ;)

Wot no life? Feb. 8th, 2004 09:53 am
Just scanned through the last 40 posts I made. About a third are propogation of news stories, as many again are geek notes and queries, and the rest are a combination of SPF, bad puns, memes and general politicking. (Apparently it's been a poor week for pretentious philosophising)

And yet over 100 people keep this journal on their friends list?

Anyhoo -

Firstly, to redress the balance, the social aspect of this week:

Monday: nowt.

Tuesday: PL for [info]redcountess' birthday drinks - much sociable chatting.

Wednesday: was supposed to go to the gym. Didn't. MUST go this week.

Thursday: London.pm meet. Geekery; gods I needed the fix. No one in my role should get this tech deprived. Also, for some reason, large numbers of inebriated perlsters singing the Top Gun theme, repeatedly and with homoerotic overtones, or some such. Also much appreciation of Guns, Germs, and Steel, which I've just finished - it answers the Kilroy Question in more depth that he'll have seen in his life.

Friday: PL again. Good night, great people (even if I get wibbly around certain highly attractive females with lethal eyebrows); ended with [info]maneatingtigger trying (quite deservedly I feel) to beat me to death for telling her "And remember, you've got to go owwwwwwwwwwwwwwww".

Saturday: British Museum with [info]duranorak. Fantastic history, culminating in mummied eel. Couldn't find any statues of sekhmet that looked remotely like me, although I saw a number that didn't (got the Cat's attention though).
Then Sushi, with No Eel, and remarkable financial restraint.
Thence the Dev; to catch up with [info]valkyriekaren and [info]olethros and also to meet [info]cavalorn. Genuinely strange conversations and much giggling.
Finally home to versuvio pizza and a concerted effort to wash a week's worth of cigarette STENCH out of my hair and skin. ICK.
And discussion with Dave on a new web/technical project which might be genuinely interesting and useful; more on this later.
