mysql -Dmydb -uroot -ppass < bloodyhugebackupfile.sql

Can anyone tell me why that *keeps* hanging? (just stops dead)

Update
Sorted... thanks Dan ;)

If you've access to the database log, you could look to see after which SQL operation it hangs. My first guess would be that a syntax error is accidentally placing much of the file in an unterminated expression or accidentally turning it into a very big operation. Failing that I would check if the filesystem was full or otherwise faulty and then strace/ktrace the daemon to see if it was hanging on a system call. Are the database files NFS-mounted?

You have my sympathy. I really hate MySQL.

Ah yes... /var is full

df tells me there's 450 MB of data in it. du says 116 Mb.... WTF?!?!?!

There could be a variety of causes, but maybe some big files would turn up in lost+found if you ran fsck?

I did an fsck after I posted that, which said nothing informative, but left me with rather more free space - no sign of anything huge in lost+found, though...
