Stand by to repel borders...

herbaceous, that is.

I've spent most of today in the garden, either reclaiming the lawn from the various plant growing out of the borders (and quelling many of the internecine struggles therein), or sitting on a bench in the shade reading H2G2. I have discovered that in almost every tree, bush or shrub in the garden there is something growing that is spiky; it's something of an arms race in there, and mine came last.

I should probably prune the 8-foot rosebush I located, but I'd have to find out how, first.

In any case, the garden is now far clearer; the lawn looks about twice the size, I'm hoping I've not achieved sunburn, and there *may* be enough clear space around the birdfeeder for its intended avian clientele to use it without too much consternation. The bag of peanuts that preceded it, unsurprisingly, suffered a brief yet fatal attack of squirrel.

However the best bit of it all was that I actually had time to relax in the garden without anything more pressing needing doing, or feeling that I was neglecting some vital chore. Perhaps, at some point in the not-too-distant future, I might even find the time to use my English Heritage membership.

PS: Didn't there used to be a bit in H2G2 about "rocks... missing him by inches and, in some cases, hitting him by kilograms"?

PPS: Firefox (upgrade to 1.0.5 by the way, folks) has decided to display phase.org with Zeldman's favicon. Wonder what it's trying to tell me?
