"ISRAEL MUST ACT WITHIN INTERNATIONAL LAW" - JACK STRAW - Grin with cat attached — LiveJournal
Previous Entry Next Entry
The Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said today:

"Some 36 Palestinians, many of them civilians, have been killed in the West Bank and Gaza since 20 February. I am deeply concerned by the number of civilian deaths, including that of a pregnant woman in Bureij refugee camp at the weekend, when her neighbour's house was demolished. The indiscriminate use of force by the Israeli Defence Force only fuels the cycle of violence, denying both Israelis and Palestinians the security they deserve. I have repeatedly championed Israel's right to take steps to provide security for its citizens, but these must be within international law.

I don't, as a rule, like Jack Straw, but I he's impressed me with his grasp of the Middle East position before.

It has been apparent for a while that Jack Straw in the Foreign Office is not quite the disaster he was at the Home Office. He's been quite willing to have a go at the Israeli government's excesses on occasion, and at the more obnoxious of Dubya's pet hawks.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was a good Home Secretary, but he's doing a better job than he was before the move.

It's an odd thing about Jack Straw. When he was Home Secretary, he quietly introduced a non-discriminatory policy for same-sex couples w.r.t. immigration - so that now the same-sex partner of a British citizen is treated identically to the opposite-sex partner of a British citizen. I class him with the many "closet socialists" in New Labour: they want to do the right thing, they're just afraid the tabloids won't love them if they do.
