Installed + working from source, 'cos debian lacks pkgs for latest PHP
Apache 1.3.26
PHP 4.3.1
libpng 1.2.5
added:
libjpeg v6b
freetype 2.1.4

A couple of hours' work, mainly due to playing "guess the flags" with PHP's configure scripts.

Not a particularly noteworthy achievement, but enough to convince me I can still do this admin lark.

1.3.27 has some security and bug fixes over 1.3.26, but they may not be significant.

Latest listed version on
http://www.php.net/downloads.php
(I thought 4.3.2 was still at the RC level ?)

and latest debian src-pkg for Apache (which I vaguely recall contains the 1.3.27 fixes anyway)

Since it's an internal test box that I'm going to have to vape shortly anyway I wasn't obsessive about versions, I really just needed to know how complex the task was and what timescale to allow for it in future.

Which, I assume, requires the apps to have been packaged for gentoo?

No, the emerge system compiles the program from source with all dependencies, etc. By default. It does all the hard work for you.
