Can anyone give me some pointers to information on RAID arrays - what the various levels mean, what you'd expect to use for certain tasks, any associated issues or stuff I'd need to know?

(yus, I keep turning into a sysadmin)

Spotted while reading http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.html?i=110 :

Further obscure levels (up to 53!) are here: http://www.acnc.com/04_01_00.html

I've only ever heard of people actually using RAID 0 (for performance) and 5 (for fault-tolerance). 5 is the closest to one-size-fits-all.

I've never used software RAID - is it trustworthy?
