Cards you touch against those yellow panels on top of the tube gates, instead of feeding through the machine.

They're supposed to be more durable and more reliable. This would appear to be bollox.

Everyone who works in Transport House (tube headquarters) has one - they were the first to test them - so half the people at St James's Park have had them for a while. They seem to work very well except when someone gets too much crap between the and the bottom of their handbag.

Could yours be a duff one?

Could be - I've nothing in the card wallet but that and my photocard - I can't figure if you're supposed to swipe the card across, tap it or what...

They're supposed to work up to 6 inches from the yellow circle - either your card or your barrier is shafted.

[oh gods, I'm such a transport geek...]

Thanks for indirectly explaining what the yellow pad things are - I finally saw someone use one last week, and spent the next couple of days waving my travelcard over them in mystified silence just in case it would magically begin to work for me as well...
