Since I'm not going to trust what MS tell me are the minimum (or recommended) requirements for any of their OS, can you suggest what system I really need to run win2000 or XP on reliably(*)? Office and MSIE work, mainly.


(*) for appropriate values of 'reliably'

For office/net usage use:

Win2k
min: P-II 300 & 196MB RAM
good: P-III 700 & 256MB RAM
sensible limits: P-III 1000 & 512MB RAM

WinXP
min: P-II 300 & 256MB RAM
good: P-III 1000 & 512MB RAM
sensible limits: P4 2000 & 1GB RAM

I once got XP to install and more-or-less run on a P166 with 32 megs RAM. The install took 4 days, and it crashed a lot. Yes, I _was_ that bored.
