Section 28, the law prohibiting councils from 'promoting' homosexuality, was today finally repealed as the Local Government Bill received Royal Assent.|
Now, that needs shouting from the rooftops. Then perhaps some of my teaching colleagues who could never understand they weren't bound by the bl**dy thing might pull their fingers out.
Homophobic bullying is out of control in far too many schools and people have used Section 28 as an excuse for their lack of action.
After all the fuss a couple of years ago about this one, they seem to have sneaked it through without fanfare in the end.
Also, Jeffrey Archer is to be stripped of his peerage in new legislation which forbids people convicted of certain serious crimes (including perjury) to sit in the Lords.
Fucking yes! OF course it won't stop kids behaving like little shits at each other, but maybe somebody will point it out to my old biology teacher.
I'm sure one of our Scottish friends will be along shortly to say "what, that old thing? we got rid of ours years ago" as if it was a rotating dial phone.
As it was what got me into politics and activism in the first place I could use this as an excuse to retire from trying to change the world =:oP
I've just rehashed Sheffield University LGB website and was wondering wtf had happened with section 28 as I am well behind the times on current affairs.
Will do an update now and link to some stuff - yay!
Evil evil evi piece of legislation, too may people I know treated beyond badly and not sorted because of it. I certainly got my share of homophobic crap at school.
