I recently sent the following to Harry Cohen (Lab, Leyton and Wanstead) using www.faxyourMP.com, and received the reply included thereafter.
Stapled to his letter, and my email, was the email of another constituent on an entirely different matter, which seems indicative of the care taken...
To: Mr Harry Cohen
MP for Leyton and Wanstead
House Of Commons
Monday 17 November 2003
Dear Mr Harry Cohen,
I am writing to you to ask that you urgently withdraw your signature from EDM 1783. While I understand that you believe you are acting in the best interests of your constituents, the results of previous helmet-compulsion laws for cyclists show only one outcome; a reduction in cycling leading to increases in traffic and a decrease in public health, and no significant reduction in head injuries to remaining cyclists.
Rather than overload your in-tray by copying it here, I urge you to read my own full report on this subject at http://www.ukcycling.net/pages/?page=helmets - if you are unable to view this I would be glad to email or fax it to you, as well as the points raised by the CCN at:
Once more, I urge you to withdraw support from a measure which can only harm the area that means so much to both of us.

Dear Mr George
Thank you for your email (which I was unable to reply to electronically).
You ask that I withdraw my signature from EDM 1783 which favours a law to require helmets for 'cyclists'.
I note your point of view, but personally do not share it for safety reasons.
However, it does not seem likely that the government will change the law.
Harry Cohen MP
Suffice to say I'm less than impressed...
