What is the strange magic of select comittees? They seem to have an incredible power to cause MPs to a) make sensible and constructive analyses and b) become totally invisible to the press or government.

Well, select committees tend to get ignored by most journalists, and spend their time talking to people who understand the situation instead . . . a little of that's bound to rub off.

In other words, a) is the consequence of b).
