Perhaps because the blithe economic and employment assumptions under which one chooses to get into debt in the first place (a bonny diploma from a major University will make me so much more employable that it's worth it to go into hock up to my carotid arteries) turn out not to be true. It seems to me that the levels of debt accumulation permitted college students (who, as a body, are at the wrong end of life to be making wise decisions about such accumulations of debt) ought not to be available. I realize that college is an oftentimes excruciating expense, but perhaps some rethinking on a societal level as to the necessity of college (or perhaps of college RIGHT NOW as soon as one has cleared one's primary education) is in order. I'll admit I'm sort of airily philosophizing without offering any concrete solution. I'm still working on trying to identify the problem and its root causes before suggesting any way out of the mess.
