How the hell did they do it? How did the media, or government, or whoever, lead US-Americans to be more worried about a bit of torn lace(*), and the UK public more worried about some bunch of has-beens eating bugs for attention, than about war, corruption, racism, environmental degradation, (and so on)?

As I understand the modified garment was supposed to allow the breast cup to be removed and leave the lace behind, so it's the lace that failed.
