I'm not exactly up on the British political scene. I gather this party is a group that favors separation from the EU. How and why is this bad?

Without getting into why separating the UK from the EU is a very, very dumb idea, the UKIP are a rightwing, nationalist party. They didn't get voted in because of a renewed resurgence of interest in the activities of the European Parliament; they got voted in as a knee-jerk reaction to the perceived problems of immigration and 'asylum seekers'.
