Microsoft unveils Linux-Killer Aug. 12th, 2004 05:04 pm
With Windows XP Starter Edition, first-time home PC users can have up to three programs and three windows per program running concurrently. Further simplification of the operating system includes the display resolution set to 800x600 maximum and no support for PC-to-PC home networking, sharing printers across a network or more advanced features such as the ability to establish multiple user accounts on a single PC.

This, by the way, is the product they've created for East Asia, to wipe out Linux and put a stop to XP piracy.

But hey, it says you can choose between country specific wallpapers though plus

"screensavers with familiar landscapes, flags and geography-specific traditional designs".

Good lord it may not do anything useful... but it will do it in a country specific way.

The only customer they want for this thing is their bribees customers in government offices, so that Windows can remain the official OS used by government offices. The idea is that said customers will have an excuse to buy Windows if it's cheap enough, and they're unlikely to want more than three apps at a time for your generic low-level public servant (Word, a couple of custom apps). Microsoft would rather have people using pirate Windows than legitimate Leegnux.

Oh, I can just see how that one will go. "Okay, I can spend money on this dinky OS that can only run three programs, can't do networking or printer sharing, can't do multiuser accounts, and can't even display well on a modern screen...or I could spend NO money on this OS that can run any freakin' server I want in addition to all these fun desktop programs, does all kinds of funky networking and has built in multiuser support, good multitasking, and the code is open source besides?"

Microsoft has truly become the Bozo the Clown of the computer world.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha… [falls off chair]

Here's a good idea! Let's make something really shit, and charge people money for it, and then they will
  1. stop using our good stuff that they've already stolen from us, and
  2. stop using stuff that's free and better than anything we could ever make.

No, it's not going to work.

Heh. Sounds like they're just trying to get rid of all those copies of Windows Millenium they've got left over...
