What are tonsils actually for, anyway?
They're bodies of lymphoid tissue, involved in recognising and combatting infections. When you get a normal infection and you get glands up in your neck - that's them doing their job. Of course, this means they have to be put right in the way of any arriving pathogens, so sometimes they get infected themselves.
