What are tonsils actually for, anyway?

They're bodies of lymphoid tissue, involved in recognising and combatting infections. When you get a normal infection and you get glands up in your neck - that's them doing their job. Of course, this means they have to be put right in the way of any arriving pathogens, so sometimes they get infected themselves.

I hope you get well soon. This can't be much fun for you.

Hrm, how very noble of them. Still, the penicillin seems to be helping, and I'm recovering.
Thanks :)
