By 1930 BST it looked rather like a repeat of last year's May Day protest, with police holding a firm line and stopping any dispersal of the crowd.|
Hold protestors captive, stop them from going home, and they'll get angry, someone will throw something, and police and media can justify their predictions and budget.
Bit less of a mess than last year, at least.
I just had an idea about this last night. The French cops (as in many countries) carry guns. Ours don't. Maybe this is one reason they're so free with their fists, as it were. the Frenchies have to police reasonably intelligently and in a "hands-off" way, unless they are seriously dangerously provoked, or there would be trouble. Also, The Brits don't feel protected by any weapons, so they have to bash people with sticks to make sure they don't get bashed themselves. I'm not saying we should give our police guns though. I really don't think that's a good idea. I was just speculating about the psychological differences for the police in London v. Paris.
