Thanks to all for the feedback on the uber-sized HDD problem with Linux - I think it's all in hand now...

Now, next question, if I may...
Can you recommend a good way of backing up an office full of PCs (and possibly a few Macs) to a Linux server? PCBackup has been mentioned but I can't seem to find a thing about it.

Just tested it and smbmount with rdiff-backup works. The problem is that you would have to set the whole part of the drive you want backed up as a share and you might consider that security risk (I'm not a windows guru and I've no idea to what extent shares can be tied to individual IP addresses).
