Yoinked wholesale from softfruit:
The Indie's online petition to introduce democracy to the UK, for anyone into signing such things:
Plus a letter from Charles Kennedy taking Blair to task:
Do such petitions ever really work though, beyond making the petitioners and those signing them feel self-righteous? Is there any evidence for a petition ever actually having the desired effect? Do people in authority really ever pay attention to them?
Organised one by reputable sources have been known to, especially if the media get hold of it. It's certainly more likely to work if more people sign it - and it is, of course, only a part of the process.
Step one is to consider whether the petition is ever actually going to be handed in anywhere. The ones random socialist worker types tout in shopping centres on a Saturday morning rarely make it to anyone in authority.
I think the Indie probably know where Downing Street is.
