Comparatively balanced and rational news on BBC News 24 all day, then they go over to the Six O'Clock News (the mass-consumption broadcast shown on BBC1 etc) and there's throw-away comments about "the emergency services, stretched beyond their limits".

Oh, and now "Islamist Terrorists".

Have it on just behind my head...

It's been nuts for the last 2 hours here getting phonecalls sorted.

A friend of mine managed to get the BBC subtitle stream via a bot onto an IRC channel. I've got the scrollback of all the day's news in subtitle misworded glory...

Ugh... Even with crappy semi-live subtitling you can see the whole manner change. Grr at the 'islamic terrorists' 'al quaida' being dropped in every few minutes.

My educational experience for the day was finding out the difference between Islamic and Islamist. I'm still not convinced they're entirely justified in the way they use Islamist, but it makes a bit more sense now.

I can't say I do understand the difference between 'islamist' and 'islamic' but I shall now go and look it up (somewhere).

However, I know for a fact that the subtitling would not be clever enough to differentiate between two subtly different words in a million years. This is the subtitling system which quotes Tony Blair as "Not going to let the terraces get us down" which I have to say is a fantastic misparse of terrorist.

By the 7 am bulletin on BBC World this morning, they'd decided Islamist was too much of a mouthful and just started saying "Islamic".

Also, did anyone else notice Blair in one of his statements from Gleneagles saying that the vast majority of Muslims are law-abiding and "abhor these acts as much as we do"? I get what he means, of course, but notice who apparently does and doesn't count as "we" to our Esteemed Leader.

Grr indeed. I've been listening to Radio 4, who hardly seem to have mentioned Islam at all (at least not to my notice), except to have the quote from the chairman of the British Muslim Federation (IIRC), who was definitely reaching the "if it was 'Muslims' who did this, they've not been reading the Koran properly" stage ...

Even BBC News 24 raised my ire when they showed two badly injured men being taken out of an ambulance - after all they'd been through they deserved some privacy -I switched off the tv then and there and have not turned it back on.

Yeah, I noticed that. I am going to see what I can do about sending/delivering a message of support to the local mosque when I get back to London.
