"US air marshals are being sent to the UK to provide extra air security".

So, not satisfied with a one-way extradition "treaty", extraordinary rendition, and requests to send tanks to London, we now have american cops playing in our airspace?

Oh - and I'm not trying to be funny - you might not want to have headphones / music on in the tube or busses tonight.

Nothing says "security" like a twitching american imbecile with a gun. I feel safer already.

*More* air marshalls. As far as I can tell, there have been air marshalls on some flights for years.

What's the issue with headphones/music on public transport? I haven't seen anything in the media about it.

Presumably inability to hear if someone is shouting 'oi you with the backpack, stop where you are!'

So, a great time to be deaf.

There were instances after last year's bombings where the wires of personal stereo headsets were mistaken by other commuters for detonation wires on possible suicide bombs.

If you want a safe society, then it pretty much by definition can't be a safe society. Pick your poison... a free society where it's always remotely possible that some random whackjob with an axe to grind can set off a couple kilos of C4 on your train... or a rigidly overcontrolled pervasively intrusive police state where if you cross your eyes at the wrong moment the SWAT teams'll take you downtown (or just plain take you DOWN)
