What I did on the weekend. Apr. 1st, 2008 10:28 am
Wore out the soles of my walking boots, apparently. Bugger.

This was achieved by spending most of Sunday barging around an abandoned airbase near Bury shooting people with BB airsoft guns, with various friends from work. This was a near-illegal degree of fun, 'though my legs ached like hell yesterday and the journey back was a nightmare of "replacement bus services", including one that did its damnedest to crash.

In between shooting people, getting shot, and hitting the deck in patches of briars or nettles, I also bumped into duncanneko, who was working the event.

Brief video from the day:

There's about 2 seconds of me in there somewhere...

Seems to be a fault with the link.

Fair enough - for me it just gives a link to the page I'm currently on.

BB guns?!?! Now, to a Yank, the term "BB gun" denotes a pneumatically powered gizmo that shoots copper-plated steel balls .177" in diameter, at anything from about 250 up to and occasionally over 700fps. Shooting at one another with such implements doesn't seem the healthiest entertainment option.

Yeah - they can kill small birds. I'm a bit curious about what this is supposed to be about.

A *lot* less powerful than those, thankfully.

Fortunately these ones shoot 0.20 to 0.36g, 6mm plastic spheres at something between 200-350 fps - they can really sting (although it's usually more of a hard tap), but they're definitely less aggressive than the sort of air rifle you describe. For some reason the ammo's still called a BB.

AFAIK the worst injury from one of these in field play in the UK has been a broken tooth - and most people wear face shields.

Ah, ok. That's what I've seen referred to as Airsoft guns. That makes sense. Decent guns are a touch pricey, or I'd probably get into that myself.

My last pair of walking boots lasted 15 years and never wore down, I replaced them because the metal bits snapped off in -42C. The new pair, same make, same model, are wearing out much faster. I am not impressed with the company.

Perhaps I'm just fatter and heavier now.

Definitely.
